Dr. Yunus told Sheikh Hasina to keep quiet until he requested her to return

Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus has expressed frustration with Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, following her removal from power by a mass movement of students and citizens. After resigning from her position as Prime Minister and fleeing to India, Sheikh Hasina, who is also the President of the Awami League, has been seeking refuge in India.

In an interview with the Indian news agency PTI, Dr. Yunus shared his displeasure regarding Sheikh Hasina’s actions. The interview was published today, Thursday, on the PTI News website.

Dr. Yunus remarked, "While she is in India, the former Prime Minister should remain silent until Bangladesh decides to take her back." His comments came in response to Sheikh Hasina's recent political statements, which Yunus labeled as "unfriendly."

He continued, "No one is comfortable with Sheikh Hasina's presence in India because we want her to return to Bangladesh to face justice. She is staying in India and, at the same time, making statements, which is causing problems. If she had remained quiet, we would have forgotten about the situation, and people would have moved on because she would have stayed in her own world. But she’s in India, speaking out and giving instructions, and no one is happy about it."

Dr. Yunus emphasized that her actions were seen as unfriendly towards Bangladesh. He added, "Everyone understands this. We strongly believe she should stay silent. Her statements and directives are not in good faith towards us. She has been granted refuge there, and yet, she’s using her position to campaign. It’s not as though she’s there under normal circumstances. She fled under the pressure of a mass uprising and public anger."

Speaking about future India-Bangladesh relations, Dr. Yunus expressed hope for strong ties with India but stressed that New Delhi must abandon the narrative that only Sheikh Hasina’s leadership can ensure stability in Bangladesh.
